Managing over 6,800 homes in London and Hertfordshire, Origin Housing provides affordable housing and a range of care and support services to vulnerable people and the elderly.
Alphatrack Systems (ASL) was approached to build a fire-alarm system for two Origin properties in Doughty Street, London.
With incoming residents and a date for the building’s opening, time was very much of the essence. However, a slightly more unusual challenge soon became clear.
Being the birthplace of English poet, Charlotte Mew, the buildings are “Blue Plaque” English heritage sites and needed to conform to various internal and external restrictions.
A further challenge presented itself in the lack of available site drawings; in short, ASL needed to move quickly and efficiently to install a fire alarm system and obtain the necessary certificates ahead of opening day.
With this in mind, ASL engineers commenced work on Easter Monday, conducting a full survey and creating CAD images to assist the installation.
The system was designed and installed to blend into the existing aesthetics and multi-criteria detectors were incorporated to negate potential for cigarette smoke led false alarms. 72-hour battery back-up was also implemented to compensate for any problems during weekends or holiday.
ASL managed to survey each building and successfully install fire alarm systems, receiving the relevant safety certification ahead of the opening day deadline. Much of the remaining time was was used to train Origin’s staff in the use of the system. A job well done…
